The very short tale of a Christmas tree

I bought a tree.
A Douglas Fir to be exact.
It was beautiful and smelled so Christmas-y.
The smell reached to every corner of my 2 bedroom cottage.

Clint was gone so me and Eva went to pick a tree.
I picked the most beautiful and least expensive I could find.
It was $19.99.
I brought it in from the truck and put it on the stand all by myself.
That is an amazing feat when you have an 11 month old with you.

Apparently new Christmas trees need lots of water.
I’ve been told that my mother-in-law waters hers every three hours. She even gets up during the night to water her tree.
But then she spent $134.99 on her tree so maybe that is why.
I was told that much too late.

My tree is now dry and crunchy.
If you touch it you can hear needles dropping.
There is a huge pile of needles completely covering my tree skirt.
I will have to get some pictures to share because it is pretty comical.
My beautiful, soft, Douglas Fir lasted one day.
It is a huge 7 foot tall fire hazard.

Have a Regular Christmas-Festival of Trees 2009

Today the Festival of Trees starts and me, my sister and mom all put a gingerbread house together again.

Last year we put in a lot of work so this year we decided to do something easier and simple.

My mom did the cardinal with just frosting. She is amazing.

So if you want to help the sick kids go to the Festival of Trees.

I will be there tomorrow night if you want to get my autograph.

Happy Holiday but not a second more

Our holidays are too short. There is all this hype and then they last one day and then life comes back at you like a freight train. I keep thinking “I wish it was last week because last week was a three day work week followed by eating and laziness.” Thanksgiving is a superb holiday and one that should last the whole weekend. Instead Christmas starts at exactly midnight on Friday with all that stupid Black Friday madness and Thanksgiving is pushed aside as if it were an annoying…..whatever. I miss you Thanksgiving.

I do love a good Christmas though.

Alas, it has the same end result as Thanksgiving except the day after Christmas is ten times worse. I try to listen to Christmas music and watch Christmas movies but they don’t have the same sparkle and warmth as before Christmas. I just end up feeling like a loser who is begging for that hot guy to make out with me and he only does it out of pity because he misses his girlfriend. (Are you wondering how I know how that feels?)
So happy Christmas everyone, enjoy the movies and music while they last; 24 days and counting.

And I would like to send my blog readers a Christmas card this year. You do a lot for me by reading this blog. And yes I do Christmas cards. I love Christmas and my husband loves Christmas cards. So if you would like one email me your address. I realize that if you accept a card we are crossing the virtual realm into the reality realm but whatever, I do actually exist and so do you.

Merry Christmas

Wow! It has been a while. It has been a busy time for me at work and when I get home I don’t want anything to do with the computer so I have done nothing personally on the computer for myself in a while. I feel like this Christmas season has completely passed me by. I have done a few fun things to celebrate the holiday but not enough. My apartment is way too small to have a tree and all my decorations are in storage so it is not very Christmas-y. As always, next year will be much more Christmas-y.

So on to my holiday complaint. Last week I watched a news cast about how to gently break the news to your kids that Christmas will be small this year due to the economy. This infuriated me. It just shows that we have turned Christmas into a gift giving holiday and completely forgotten why we celebrate. Don’t get me wrong, I love presents, who doesn’t, but I don’t need twenty presents under the tree with my name on them to make my Christmas a special one and I don’t think that kids need that either. If people didn’t go completely go overboard at Christmas for their kids than this economic crisis would go unnoticed under the tree this Christmas.

Another thing, why does Santa get all the credit for the presents? Parents work hard to provide for their kids and then Santa gets all the credit for Christmas. Now that I am becoming a parent I think the way I will handle Christmas is that Santa will give one present or maybe do the stockings. I think that Santa is a fun tradition and something that kids love but he is not going to be the center of our Christmases. Of course I want Christ to be the center and I also want family to be the center and I want to make fun memories without everything being centered around gifts.

Let’s all make a goal this Christmas. Instead of the first question you ask people being (including kids) “What did you get for Christmas?” maybe ask “What was your favorite memory this Christmas?” or “What did you do for Christmas?” or let’s go crazy and ask “What did you give someone for Christmas?”.

Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees starts on Wednesday, December 3rd and goes through December 6th. My mom and sister and I did display for the Gingerbread Village and I am inviting you all to go and support this good cause and check out our work. If you have never been this should be the year you go. If you don’t go every year you now have a reason to go again. If you go every year good job. All proceeds go to Primary Children’s Hosptial so if you don’t go it means you don’t like the sick kids and you don’t think they should get better.

Now that I have given you a guilt trip check out the pictures of our design. Technically it is not a gingerbread house but it doesn’t really have to be. It is the Candy Land board game come to life. It was so fun to make it. It took us about 14 hours. Most of the credit goes to my sister who made this two years ago just for herself so all the kinks were worked out. I thought it was so cute that I knew we had to do it for the festival.

I am really happy with it and think that it turned out great. Today is decorating day so we have to transport it to the Expo Center. I don’t know who will carry it in. My mom has a bum ankle and I am pregnant so there is a chance we could trip and crush it. Oh the drama! It is like the cake challenges on the Food Network if you know what I mean.

So go to the festival everyone. It is only this week and goes from 10am to 10pm and they have great scones and fudge for those of you who need a food incentive. They also have great stuff for kids for those of you with kids.
