And then there was one or Mother nature’s a bitch

I have one chicken left.
If you recall I started with six.

The first death occurred about four days in when a stray cat ate the top half of one of the chicks. I went outside just in time to find the bottom half and the other five cowering in a group watching their friend die.

The second one didn’t die immediately but got hurt when the temporary pen blew over in a storm and landed on it breaking its hip or back. His fate will come soon.

The third got eaten by, I believe, the same stray cat. I found its wings and feathers in our hay pile.

The fourth and fifth I found dead in my yard as I was returning home from work. They were shaken to death by a dog.

The chicken that got hurt hobbled around for a while until it couldn’t hobble any more and then it just sat around and it was so sad. Teresa came over to assess the situation since she has a lot more experience than me with chickens. She delivered me the suspected news that the chicken was in bad shape and would not get better. She helped me gas him and that is all the details I will give. It was so sad but I am so glad he is not in pain anymore.
Thank you so much Teresa, seriously I don’t know what I would have done.
Well, I probably would have had my father-in-law kill him and it would not have been that gentle.
It is great to have a friend who will cry with you over chickens.

I buried all of them under a tree in my yard.

And then today Teresa and I ate at Chick-Fil-A together.
Do you think that is wrong?
Chick-Fil-A is just so good!
Seriously.

I am still looking for the owner of the dog. I know which dog it is because I caught him hanging out in my shade one day. I will go tell that owner that they can’t let their dog run around wild. I realize that the dog was just being a dog but dogs can’t just run wild.

Now I have one lone chicken who is very lonely and I will have to find him a friend.

My dad always says,”Mother Nature is sure a bitch isn’t she?”

One time I tried to save a Killdeer chick that the mother had left behind and I called my dad and he told me to put it back where I found it because it wasn’t healthy and I couldn’t teach it how to be a Killdeer. I put it back and I heard it peeping the whole day and the next day it was gone. Probably killed by a cat. It was so hard to not rescue that chick. My dad repeated that famous line to me and I have to say I do agree.
She is a bitch.

I just proof read this post. It is a little pathetic and funny. It is ok if you laugh at it. I know my chickens are happy and healthy in heaven they won’t care.

  1. Looking at baby chicks would make me want Chick Fil A too. Who doesn’t love chicken and waffle fries?

  2. That is a sad tale. I feel sad for animals that have to rely on us for their …everything. It’s hard to know what to do for them and what to protect them from.

I’m glad you now think Chick-Fill-A was funny. I was worried that I really upset you. Poor, poor, POOR chickens all over the world. Let’s seriously become vegetarians so we can ease our guilt.

    :)

  3. My stupid scroll wheel on my mouse is constantly punking me. That is why my comment for this post shows up on an entirely unrelated post. Plus, because I’m kind of retarded.

  4. Poor Poor Chickens. Remember, those chickens were your sacrificial 6. You have learned some great lessons from them. Your next 6 will live long happy lives.
