Flaming Brandied Bananas
Monday, May 26th, 2008Being with my sister Sarah over the weekend reminded me of a funny experience I had in Mexico. I was with my dad and step mom Carolyn, and my brother Mike and Sarah (Clint had gone home a bit early so he wasn’t there).
We went to this very small town and to a very authentic Mexican restaurant. The food was great and after we had eaten I was looking at the dessert menu. They offered flaming brandied bananas and I thought this sounded great. After all, the alcohol would be burned off and I would be left with sugar coated fried bananas right? I was really thinking PF Chang’s if any of you have ever had their amazing banana desert.
So anyways I order it, or my brother does since he speaks Spanish. The girl comes to our table with the bananas, brandy, sugar and a lighter. She dumps on tons of sugar, which is fine with me, and then dumps on the brandy. She then proceeded to light the brandy except that the lighter wasn’t really working. Instead of just getting another lighter she just pretended that it worked and stirred it. It was clear that there was not a flame and my brother said something. She tried again and repeated the same charade. Then she dumped on more brandy and tried to light it again. I can’t figure out if she felt stupid or she was nervous or what but she finally but the bowl in front of me and left. It was brandy banana soup and it wasn’t even warm. My dad leans over the table and says “You better eat that or she is going to be offended”. So I took a bite. It tasted like bananas soaked in nail polish remover. Mike helped me eat some of it but I didn’t finish it all the way. I should have downed it and at least gotten tipsy from it but it was way too gross.
We were all laughing so hard it is a great memory.

oh that is sooo funny! my sister lives in Iowa. They are being taken care of. I just think it is so crazy.
can I make a request that your next story be about Lex cheering on the Asian at the race?
that sounds so gross!!! I love fried bananas, and bananas foster (which I think is what she was trying to make) but cold bananas soaked in alcohol? Yuck!
It sounds very soggy! :}
Yum…reminds me of our alcohol-soaked dessert buffet in Germany. Man, other countries really know how to add that little extra something

Hey tammy I saw your comment on Sinika’s blog so I decided to pop in and say Hi. You are hilarious I love your small pleasures…i totally relate except the no wiping I haven’t experienced that yet. I love your playlist.
hey where you been? time to post.
Funny we had a very similar experience here but w/bananas foster. I think they put way too much alcohol in the soup they served us. The bananas tasted aweful! we all laughed about it after we left.
